Carnival Cruise Line: Lose your job, we'll refund your money

Cruise

CarnivalSpirit Are worries about losing your job holding you back from booking a cruise? You might want to take another look at Carnival Cruise Line, which is following in the footsteps of Norwegian Cruise Line and JetBlue in offering "job loss insurance" to customers.

Carnival today announced it was enhancing its Cruise Vacation Protection insurance plan to include a clause that will give cruisers a full refund if they need to cancel due to a job loss.

The new job loss clause will kick in if a Carnival customer who has purchased the Vacation Protection plan is terminated by their employer after they have booked a voyage but before they set sail. The customer has to have worked for the employer for at least one continuous year.

Carnival also announced several other enhancements today to its travel insurance plan, including the addition of a severe weather watch/warning protection clause. The clause provides reimbursement in the event the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and/or National Weather Service issues or maintains a severe weather watch or warning within 48 hours of a cruise departure. Should the watch or warning affect either the cruise departure city or the passenger's route to that city, the plan will allow for cancellation and reimbursement up to the full amount of the cruise cost.

Another new weather protection feature provides that if a passenger is traveling to the cruise departure port via a common carrier (airplane, bus, train, etc.) and inclement weather ultimately causes the passenger to miss 50% or more of  the cruise vacation, the passenger may receive reimbursement up to the total cost of the cruise.

The new clauses will apply to customers who buy Carnival's Vacation Protection Plan starting today.  The plan, administered by insurance company BerkelyCare, must be purchased at least 14 days prior to the start of a cruise. Prices start at $49 per person and vary by cruise length.

Some travel insurance plans that cruisers can buy from independent insurance companies include a job loss insurance clause, but it has not been a common feature with the policies sold directly by cruise lines. Norwegian Cruise Line added a similar job loss protection to its travel insurance plan in February.

COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS ANNOUNCE 2009-10 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Highlights include October 3 opener vs. Wild, October 30 clash with champion Penguins and 12 Saturday home games

COLUMBUS, OHIOThe Columbus Blue Jackets and National Hockey League announced the 2009-10 regular season schedule today and the Blue Jackets will open their ninth National Hockey League season on Friday, October 3 against the Minnesota Wild at Nationwide Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m. This year marks the sixth time in nine seasons Columbus has opened the season at home. The club is 2-1-2 all-time when opening the season at home and has gone 2-0-2 since suffering a 5-3 loss vs. Chicago in their inaugural season opener on Oct. 7, 2000.

The 2009-10 schedule continues to emphasize division rivalries as the Blue Jackets will face off six times against Central Division opponents Chicago, Detroit, Nashville and St. Louis. The club again will play four games against non-divisional Western Conference opponents and 18 contests against Eastern Conference clubs.  In addition to home-and-home sets against the Washington Capitals, Atlanta Thrashers and New York Islanders, Columbus will also host Eastern Conference foes Buffalo, Carolina, Florida, Pittsburgh, TampaBay and Toronto at Nationwide Arena this season.

The Blue Jackets’ schedule features 41 home and 41 away games and spans 188 days, including a 15-day break from February 15 to March 1 for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The schedule concludes at Nationwide Arena on Friday, April 9 against the defending Western Conference champion Detroit Red Wings. The club will play 44 of its 82 games on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, including 24 of its 41 home games (Thursday – 7; Friday – 5; Saturday – 12, which is the most in franchise history). All home games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. except for the following – Saturday, January 16 vs. Chicago (2 p.m.) and Sunday, February 14 vs. Chicago (5 p.m.).

Several games highlight the 2009-10 home schedule, including the Friday, October 30 visit by Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins. A year ago, the Blue Jackets defeated the Penguins 4-3 in a shootout before a franchise record, standing room only crowd of 19,167. The Jackets will host the defending Western Conference champion and Central Division rival Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday, November 11; Monday, December 28; and Friday, April 9 in the regular season finale. The storied Toronto Maple Leafs, an “Original Six” club, will make just their third appearance at Nationwide Arena on Thursday, December 3. New Year’s Eve hockey also returns to Columbus as the Jackets host the rival Nashville Predators on Thursday, December 31. The resurgent Chicago Blackhawks led by Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and newly-acquired Marian Hossa make the first of three visits on Saturday, January 16 and return on Valentine’s Day, Sunday, February 14 and Thursday, March 25. In the penultimate home game of the season on Saturday, April 3, Columbus welcomes two-time reigning Most Valuable Player Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to Nationwide Arena.

Single game tickets for 2009 PRE-SEASON home games will go on sale Friday, August 21. Tickets will be on sale at the Nationwide Arena Ticket Office, the FOX Sports Ohio Blue Line team store at The Mall at Tuttle Crossing, ticket outlets at Chiller Easton, Chiller Dublin, Chiller North, as well as all TicketmasterTicketCenters. Fans can also purchase tickets by phone at (614) 431-3600 or online at BlueJackets.com and ticketmaster.com. On-sale date and information for single game tickets for the 2009-10 regular season will be announced later this summer. Columbus Blue Jackets season tickets for 2009-10 are on sale now with prices starting at $18 per game. In addition, six-, 10- and 20-game packages for 2009-10 are also on sale.
