  • Top 4 National Parks to Visit in Fall

    10/21/2021 1:35:56 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment

Travel insights from Taylor Coulson, associate editor of The Compass

Are you looking for the perfect place to fulfill your fall foliage wanderlust? Visit any of these five national parks this fall when the changing palette of green trees begins taking on hues of gold, orange and red. Plus, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, is your last chance to visit a national park for free in 2021, just in time to see those famous fall colors up close.

    1. Shenandoah National Park

Virginia is for (fall) lovers and the best place to visit when fall foliage is at its fiery peak is Shenandoah National Park. It’s one of those lesser-known national parks but it holds treasures of its own, especially in late October to early November. Shenandoah National Park is actually one of America’s most accessible parks, located about an hour away by car (75 miles) from Washington, D.C. and surrounded by charming towns like Charlottesville and Harrisonburg. Some hidden treasures here include more than 200,000 acres of waterfalls, 500 miles of hiking trails, campsites and outdoor recreation. It’s easy to hit the road and take in the plum-colored sumacs and deep purple dogwoods while driving down Skyline Drive, a 105-mile stretch filled with incredible vistas from 75 overlooks of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Peak fall foliage: Fall Foliage Prediction Map projects Oct. 11-25, 2021

Where to stay: The DoubleTree by Hilton Harrisonburg , located 21.7 miles away from Shenandoah National Park and 9.7 miles from the Shenandoah Valley Airport (SHD).

    2. Grand Teton National Park

Wyoming is wild, wonderful and especially colorful during fall at its gorgeous glacial park – Grand Teton National Park. From the third week in September through early October, hikers, botanists and photographers fall in love with the yellows and golds that make everything about Grand Teton grand. More than 200 miles of hiking trails, quaking aspen along the slopes and narrowleaf cottonwoods covering the banks of the Snake River and other streams make this one of the best national parks for fall photography. You’ll find some of the best fall colors that make for excellent backdrops along scenic drives to Oxbow Bend, along Antelope Flats and on the Inner Loop Road. Also, be sure to listen for eerie elk bugles in the park – a key sign of autumn ambiance in the Tetons.

Peak fall foliage: The third week of September through early October

Where to stay: Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa, located just one mile away from Grand Teton National Park and eight miles from the Jackson Hole Airport (JAC).

    3. Acadia National Park

Maine is one of America’s favorite fall destinations and its home to the only national park in New England: Acadia National Park. This picturesque park on the coast of Maine starts cooling off in late August and by mid-October, tourism picks up. Its peak weeks in fall are filled with famous foliage covered in fiery autumnal colors and crisp, refreshing air to experience endless fall possibilities. Beginning in early October and lasting until early March, Acadia National Park also has the distinction of being the first place in the U.S. to see the spectacular sunrise every morning from the 1,530-foot summit of Cadillac Mountain. Acadia National Park is also dubbed “the crown jewel of the North Atlantic Coast,” where outdoor lovers will be in their element from finding various wildlife, ocean-front landscapes, mountain bike tracks and 160 miles of hiking trails to explore. You can easily explore plenty of the park by car – plus, your furry travel companion can ride shotgun since this is also a pet-friendly national park.

    Peak Fall Foliage: Mid-October

Where to stay: The Lucerne Inn is 23.7 miles away from Acadia National Park and 20.9 miles away from Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB).

    4. Arches National Park

Utah is the ultimate and underrated state to visit in fall because of Arches National Park. It’s one of the most popular parks in the U.S. and has something for everyone. Visiting this red-rock wonderland is like stepping into another world. While it’s known for its incredible orange and red rock landscapes year-round, fall is the best time to visit for hiking, camping, 4x4 tours, stargazing, rock-climbing and scenic flights. The autumn air is cool and tolerable in mid-October, which makes it a hot spot for hiking. Some fall favorite hikes to consider are the famous Delicate Arch or visit easier hikes to the Landscape Arch, North & South Windows, Balanced Rock and Sand Dune Arch as well.

    Peak Fall Foliage: Mid-October

Where to stay: Westgate Park City Resort is around 230 miles away from Arches National Park and 34.2 miles away from Salt Lake City Airport (SLC).

We want to remind you that Wednesday, November 11, Veterans Day, is a fee free entry to the park. Also beginning Wednesday, all U.S. armed service veterans and Gold Star dependents will be granted free entrance to all Department of Interior managed lands and waters.

  • Time to Shine Again: The Shows Go Back on in Las Vegas

    10/15/2021 3:22:38 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment

As a city of glitter, glamour, and lights, Las Vegas is shining all the brighter for its grand comeback. Of all the many options this destination has for entertainment, these are the ones that Southwest Vacations considers the surest things to make their first time back, the best time.

Experience the Magic of Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the ultimate city of escape—freedom from limitation, or even the bounds of reality. Amazing illusionists in residence like the famed David Copperfield—a headliner at MGM Grand Las Vegas—suspend audience members twice over, from rapt attention to disbelief. Plus, new at The Mirage is Shin Lim’s LIMITLESS act, the only person to ever have won America’s Got Talent twice. But if you want to catch the stars before they make it big, watch the selfsame show live at Luxor Hotel & Casino this fall, twice a night, five times a week.

Laugh Until It Hurts So Good

Top-notch comedians are bringing the belly laughs we need to some of the best stages in the city, such as that Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at MGM Grand, a stage known for being specially designed just for the funnies. Sure, he anchors there, but guest acts and special hosts add even more standouts to the standup schedule, too. Brad’s a big man with a big name, but if their taste runs more toward a big name with a big mane, Carrot Top is at it again at Luxor Hotel & Casino.

    Don’t Be a Dummy

Snagging your customers tickets to Terry Fator’s Who’s the Dummy Now act is a smart show to add to their itinerary. Already voted “Best Strip Headliner” three years in a row, this brand-new show incorporating puppetry, comedy, and chart-topping tunes at New York-New York Hotel & Casino is a crowd-pleaser set to become a classic. And don’t think his cast of puppets will be the only guest appearances. Close your eyes and a mixed bag of more than 200 celebrities might join the stage as “the world’s most gifted singing ventriloquist” channels their voices into his new lineup.

    Unlike Anything Else

There are certain experiences that are distinctive to Las Vegas: the rare, the unusual. Among them is Jabbawockeez at the MGM Grand, a for-all-ages mega-tech production of dramatic scale. And don’t forget Cirque du Soleil’s range of surrealistic, acrobatic feats. “O,” Beatles-inspired LOVE, and Michael Jackson tribute ONE are back on the roster, too.

    Hit a High Note

It’s Saturday Night Fever every night with The Australian Bee Gees tribute show at Excalibur Hotel & Casino! They’re one of many musical acts you can count on year-round in Las Vegas. Also, keep an eye out for one-off concerts like Alanis Morissette, The Killers, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martin, and more! Hot off the debut of his new band Silk Sonic’s debut album, Bruno Mars took the stage again for a limited engagement at Park Theater at Park MGM.

    Complete Your Experience

Riveted in your seat as you will be, eventually, do will have to leave the grand stage of your choosing. The best way to make the encore as good as the headliner? Staying at an MGM Resorts property, always only steps away from all these great shows. There are over 10 hotels to choose from to suit any travel or entertainment style, from iconic Las Vegas splendor to gorgeous architecture from a different city and budget-friendly digs to high-end luxury. Get there with Southwest Vacations, with your pick of countless routes and guaranteed lowest prices that can have your customers packing their bags in no time, and often with no additional fees! And best of all, in an uncertain world, this trip can be backed up with the certainty of travel protection. Learn how to travel LuggageFree.
