    Ever Evolving in Vegas
    By Mimi Kmet

Here’s the latest on the constantly changing hotel scene in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is hot. And we’re not talking about the desert climate. New hotels are opening, while existing properties are renovating, rebranding and adding amenities. Here’s a sampling:

Bellagio (888-987-6667, www.bellagio.com) completed a remodel of its Spa Tower last December. The redesign encompasses all of the tower’s 819 guestrooms and 109 suites, including the Chairman and Presidential suites. Its Resort Rooms are consistent with the three designs represented in the AAA Five-Diamond hotel’s main tower, which was renovated in 2011 with contemporary, residential décor.

Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon (www.billslasvegas.com) is closed for a $185 million renovation that will transform it into an upscale property called the Gansvoort Las Vegas. The new property is slated to open in early 2014 with 188 Parisian apartment-style guestrooms, including 19 suites.

Public spaces will include a redesigned lobby and lobby bar, an ultralounge, retail outlets, a 40,000-square-foot casino and a restaurant overlooking the Strip. Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub will be a 65,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor nightclub and rooftop pool deck.

Circus Circus (800-634-3450, www.circuscircus.com) will debut El Loco roller coaster in its Adventuredome in December. The coaster will be the second of its kind in the U.S., with negative G drops and a steep first drop. Its open design will give guests the feeling of flying during the 75-second ride.

Delano Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay, an all-suite hotel that will replace THEhotel at Mandalay Bay (877-632-7800, www.mandalaybay.com/accommodations/thehotel) is being developed by MGM Resorts International and Morgans Hotel Group in a partnership. Construction is slated to commence this fall, with completion set for early 2014.

The new hotel will offer a South Beach ambience, with each of its 1,100 suites reflecting the personality of the original Delano hotel in Miami Beach, but with a Las Vegas slant. The redesign also encompasses public spaces, including bars, lounges, restaurants and a spa.

AtThe Luxor (877-386-4658, www.luxor.com) the Jabbawockeez dance crew debuted in May with a new show called “Prism.” The show is an eclectic mix of choreography, storylines and special effects, challenging the audience to embrace the unexpected. The crew will perform in the 830-seat Jabba Theater.

MandalayBay(877-632-7800, www.mandalaybay.com) is the home of “Michael Jackson One by Cirque du Soleil,” a resident theatrical production dedicated to the King of Pop. The show, which debuted earlier this year, celebrates Jackson’s career and legacy with performances set to his music.

The hotel also opened Light nightclub in May via a partnership between The Light Group and Cirque du Soleil. The venue, the first-ever nightclub by Cirque du Soleil, features theatrics and electronic music, and world-class DJs and performers.

The MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (877-880-0880, www.mgmgrand.com) has opened Hakkasan Las Vegas, a new dining and nightlife venue, which replaced Studio 54 when it opened earlier this year.

The opening comes on the heels of a $160 million remodel, which concluded with upgrades of the 3,570 guestrooms and 642 suites in the Grand Tower last September. Among the renovated accommodations are 42 Stay Well rooms and suites, which feature more than a dozen healthy amenities, including aromatherapy, wake-up light therapy and Vitamin C-infused shower water.

AtThe Mirage (800-374-9000, www.mirage.com), four-time Grammy Award-winning R&B vocal group Boyz II Men kicked off an extended residency in March. The trio is performing in the Terry Fator Theater on select weekend dates through Dec. 29.

In addition, The Mirage launched its “Painting with the Dolphins”

program in January at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat, allowing guests to interact with a bottlenose dolphin to create a work of art.

The world’s first Nobu Hotel (800-427-7247, www.caesarspalace.com/nobu) opened in February as a hotel-within-a-hotel at Caesars Palace. The Nobu Hotel, formerly the Centurion Tower, offers 180 guestrooms, including 18 suites. Designs feature natural materials and textures, along with outsized elements.

Nobu features in-room iPad registration and a hot tea welcome amenity. Turndown service includes yukata robes, slippers and scented sleep oils. Nobu Hotel guests also have private access to, and priority seating at, the hotel’s adjacent restaurant and lounge, and can enjoy Nobu cuisine through room service.

The Palms Casino Resort (866-942-7770, www.palms.com) completed the first phase of a renovation last December, that encompasses a Palms Tower room and suite redesign, new restaurants, revamped gaming spaces and new nightlife venues. All 428 rooms and suites in the Palms Tower were remodeled in a modern style. New dining options include the sports-themed Heraea, as well as Chocolat Bistro.

The former Imperial Palace was rebranded as the Quad Resort and Casino (800-351-7400, www.thequadlv.com) last year and is undergoing a transformation that will continue in phases through late 2013 while the property remains open.

Among the upgrades is a new façade, as well as makeovers to the porte cochère, front desk, bell desk, hotel lobby, casino floor, retail promenade and dining levels with a contemporary décor. The casino floor is expanding by an additional 15,000 square feet. Plans also include a dual-sided lobby bar, a Starbucks, a retail promenade and several restaurants.

Resorts World Las Vegas is being developed by Malaysia-based Genting Group (www.genting.com), which owns 45 percent of Norwegian Cruise Line and Star Cruises, as well as gaming facilities in other countries. Genting bought the 87-acre, partially built property known as Echelon from Boyd Gaming Corporation, and plans to develop a gaming, entertainment and hotel complex, its first destination resort in Las Vegas.

    Resorts World Las Vegas will

offer 3,500 guestrooms in the first phase, as well as 175,000 square feet of total gaming space across several gaming floors. The property also will feature several luxury dining and retail amenities and additional convention space. The property is slated to open in 2016.

The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino (800-427-7247, www.riolasvegas.com) is developing a new zipline thrill ride called VooDoo Skyline. The 70-second ride will send guests higher than 400 feet in the air at speeds of up to 33 miles per hour from the VooDoo Lounge atop the hotel’s 50-story Masquerade tower to the Ipanema tower. On the return trip, guests will ride an additional 800 feet to the starting point facing backward.

Terrible’s Hotel and Casino has completed a $7 million renovation and changed its name to the Silver Sevens Hotel & Casino (800-640-9777, www.silversevenscasino.com). Property enhancements include new furniture and bathroom fixtures in all hotel rooms, a fully renovated William Hill sports book, a new casino bar, the addition of a new hospitality suite and a new players club/welcome center combination.

SLS Las Vegas (702-737-2111, www.slshotels.com/lasvegas) is se to open in early 2014, in the former Sahara Hotel and Casino. It will be the first hotel in Las Vegas by SBE, a real estate development company. Once complete, the SLS Las Vegas will feature a mixed-use resort and casino with more than 1,600 guestrooms and suites and several SBE dining and nightlife brands, including The Bazaar, Katsuya and Shelter nightclub.
