  • 10 Reasons Hawaii is the Coolest Place on the Planet

We all know that Hawaii is home to amazing beaches, palm trees and killer ocean views. But there’s so much more to the Hawaiian Islands that we’re going out a limb and saying that it is actually the coolest place on this whole planet.

    1. All but two of the world’s climate zones are found on Hawaii Island.

FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-1That’s right. In a little over 4,000 square miles, you can experience the majority of the possible climate zones that exist on Earth. That includes the polar tundra climate at the tops of Maunakea and Maunaloa all the way through (and including) tropical climates to a hot desert climate.

    2. Kauai’s Napali Coast is 17 miles long, and is only accessible by boat, helicopter or on foot.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-2

Kauai is Hawaii’s oldest island, which means some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders can be found here. There are no roads along the coast, so your best bet is to take a boat, kayak or helicopter – or your own two feet on the Kalalau trail.

    3. Maunakea is the world’s best place for stargazing.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-4

We all know that Hawaii Island is in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and it’s that location – 1,860 miles from the nearest continental land mass – combined with the height of Maunakea that makes it the ideal place to stargaze. The distance from land means light pollution is effectively zero, and the elevation of the mountain practically guarantees crystal-clear skies as you are often looking down on the clouds (when you manage to pull your gaze from the stars above, that is). Please note, a guided tour is necessary to access the summit.

    4. Oahu is home to the only official residence of royalty in the United States.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-3

Iolani Palace was the residence of King David Kalakaua and his successor, Queen Liliuokalani, from 1882 to 1893. The architecture was influenced by European styles, and the palace included several firsts for Hawaii, such as electric lights, flush toilets and telephones.

    5. Located off the coast of Maui, Molokini is one of the world’s only partially-submerged calderas.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-5

And it keeps good company, including Santorini, Greece (you’ve seen the photos), and Krakatoa, Indonesia. What makes Molokini so unique is the position of the landmass and relatively shallow water, which has created the ideal habitat for coral reefs. With water visibility of up to 150 feet and more than 250 species of marine life to see, it’s obvious why this is one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving.

    6. There are no traffic lights on the island of Lanai.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-6

And only 30 miles of the island’s roads are paved. By contrast, there are two luxury resorts on the island: Four Seasons Resort Lanai, The Lodge at Koele; and Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay.

    7. Hawaii Island is home to black sand beaches.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-7

Throughout the islands, you can, of course, find white and golden sand, but you can also enjoy black sand beaches on Hawaii Island. Its constant volcanic activity has created the jet black shores along the Puna and Kau coasts, the most famous of which is Punaluu Black Sand Beach.

    8. 437 threatened and endangered species live in Hawaii.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-8

It could literally be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see some of the species who live here or visit the warm waters surrounding the islands. They include the humpback whale and monk seal, Hawksbill and Green turtles, Hawaiian hawk, Maui parrotbill, Hawaiian gardenia, and the Maunakea silversword.

    9. Waves can reach more than 40 feet on Oahu’s North Shore during the winter.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-10

It’s no wonder the beaches of the North Shore host the world’s premier surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Check out more than seven miles of legendary beaches including Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach, Sunset Beach and Haleiwa Beach. Just be sure to leave the surfing to the pros.

    10. Kilauea Volcano has been erupting since 1983.

    FJV_10ReasonsWhyHawaii-9

Located on Hawaii Island, Kilauea Volcano has been erupting for 32 years. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers one of the only places on Earth where visitors can walk near the active eruption on miles of paths and trails. You can also walk through a 500-year-old lava tube that was formed by an underground channel of molten lava.
