  • This Year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Will Be Different

    The coronavirus pandemic will not stop the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade but it will be different.


    “For more than 90 years, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has kicked off the holiday season with its signature entertainment spectacle, making it one of the world’s most beloved events,” a statement on the event’s website reads. “Following our successful, safe and innovative production of Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, it is our intention to similarly reimagine Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade this November. Stay tuned for more details later this fall.”


    Macy’s Independence Day firework show featured a week of fireworks throughout each borough and a grand finale atop the Empire State Building.
    That may provide some sort of blueprint for what the parade could look like.


    “Some is going to be virtual, there might be some small in-person pieces, spread out pieces, it’s not going to look at all of course like how we are used to,” de Blasio added. “But the important thing is, the traditions will be kept in some way.”


    The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade started in 1924, making it tied for the second-oldest Thanksgiving Day parade in the United States, behind only America’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Detroit, which started in 1920.


    It typically takes place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thanksgiving, with the route running through Manhattan and finishing outside Macy’s Herald Square in Midtown. The event has been nationally televised on NBC since 1953, and is known for its massive balloons featuring popular characters like Snoopy and Spider-Man.


    For over 20 years Tyus Tours and Travel has provided great vacation packages to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade but due to the pandemic those packages are no longer available. In the coming weeks Tyus Tours and Travel will provide more information on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

    Why are travelers keeping their travel hush-hush? No Facebook or Instagram post, no text to friends about their latest adventure, no bragging rights. During the pandemic the phrase "traveling shaming has taken off and most folks would rather not be scolded.


    The pandemic presents a unique case of travel entering the moral sphere, because there are two things that happen when you travel: The first is that I put myself at risk, and the second is by virtue of putting myself at risk, I could be spreading coronavirus to other people.


    Sharing the details about where we’ve traveled has always been a way to transmit our values, tastes and means — look no further than the postcards of the 19th century or the Kodak carousels of the 1960s and 70s. Then came Instagram, a decade ago, to turbocharge the practice. And while technology has made it easy to keep up with loved ones during this period of physical distance, there is one topic being withheld from conversations and hidden from social media: vacations. For a variety of reasons related to the pandemic, some travelers are content to let the tree fall in the forest, so to speak, without a single soul around to hear it.


    So far there is no universally agreed-upon consensus about whether or not to travel. If you think it’s fine to travel and some people don’t think it’s fine — but if you’re not persuaded by the opposing argument — you may feel motivated to hide your behavior.


    We’re living in this moment when longstanding inequities are particularly stark and the dividing line is between people whose lives remain relatively normal and people whose lives have been completely turned upside down by this pandemic. I feel like vacation pictures signal to the world, ‘Hey! This isn’t so bad!’ And it has been really that bad for many, many, many people.”
