  • Romance Travel For Couples and Solo Travelers

    10/20/2023 1:55:36 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment

Romance doesn’t or should not end at “yes” or “I do.” This is something I am sure you have heard before, and I suspect that romance travel was invented for just this purpose. Enter various destinations that specialize in romance, vying to give you the best experience, whether you are popping the question, getting married, spending some quality time together or renewing your vows. Enjoying those fabulously romantic hotels or resorts should not just be for those special moments. I believe regular visits to various romantic destinations will help keep the flame of romance alive. I cannot think of a more fun and pleasurable way to reconnect and rekindle to keep those fires burning.

Romantic Destinations For the Solo Traveler

I don’t believe that romance travel is exclusively reserved for couples. It can be a deeply enriching experience for solo travelers as well. Exploring the world on your own terms, free from distractions and fully embracing self-discovery can be an incredibly romantic and empowering journey. It's an opportunity to fall in love with yourself, to connect with new people and cultures and to open your heart to unexpected encounters. In the solitude of solo romance travel, you can find the space to reflect, rejuvenate and rekindle the passion for life, love and adventure. It's a chance to celebrate your independence and create your own romantic narrative, one filled with self-care, self-love and personal growth. Some of my most “romantic” solo experiences have been on safari where I spent several nights in a tent or treehouse, with only the flames of a fire for company, sleeping under the stars and listening to the distant roar of lions. Take my word for it, there is nothing like a safari for a solo traveler.

    Pre-Wedding Trips

In a world filled with hustle and bustle it is easy to lose one another. Even planning a wedding, which is supposed to be an experience filled with romance and fun, can be filled with so much busywork that it is easy to forget the “why” of getting married, instead just focusing on the “how.” Pre-wedding trips hold immense significance in the journey towards marriage. They offer a chance for the engaged couple to bond on a deeper level. Wedding planning can be stressful, and pre-wedding trips provide a break from the preparations, allowing couples to relax and reconnect and an opportunity for quality time together before the wedding. These trips often remind couples why they fell in love in the first place. Traveling to a new destination can offer unique cultural experiences, introducing couples to different traditions and practices, which can be both educational and unifying. The memories created during these trips often become part of the love story, setting the stage for a beautiful start to the marriage journey.

Selecting the Right Location For a Proposal

This is a decision of great significance and depends on the couple and their personalities and what they love to do together. Choosing a scenic mountaintop to propose, either during a hike or by taking a cable car to the summit is perfect for the nature-loving active couple and those panoramic views will enhance the moment. The serenity and natural beauty of a botanical garden can provide a lovely backdrop for a proposal as well as a historical landmark that holds significance to both, such as a castle, lighthouse or a centuries-old tree. Rooftop restaurants with breathtaking cityscapes or ocean views are perfect for the foodie couple who will enjoy celebrating with a delicious meal. For a more intimate proposal, a private beach at sunrise or sunset with the sound of the waves and the sand beneath their feet will create a beautiful and serene atmosphere. These proposal locations serve as a beautiful starting point for a lifelong journey of love and commitment.

The Ever-Growing Trend of Destination Weddings

Destination weddings have become increasingly popular as the allure of celebrating your love in a far-off, picturesque location is undeniable. However, couples should not ignore the beautiful and equally breathtaking local destinations in the USA. Choosing locations that hold a personal meaning or reflect their shared interests is a good start in those discussions. Destination weddings often result in smaller, more intimate guest lists which allows couples to spend quality time with their loved ones and ensures a more personal and meaningful celebration. My personal favorite is the built-in honeymoon location. With your wedding and honeymoon in the same location, you can seamlessly transition from tying the knot to the honeymoon getaway, saving time and effort. Having a safari wedding and an island honeymoon (or vice versa) is an incredible option for the adventurous couple.

Many destination wedding locations boast breathtaking natural beauty and cultural charm, creating stunning backdrops for that special day and an opportunity to experience the local culture, offering a rich and immersive experience.

    Popular Wedding & Honeymoon Destinations

Tuscany, Italy is known for its rolling vineyards, historic villas and delicious cuisine, and Tuscany offers an amazing romantic and picturesque setting for weddings. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico is popular for its beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife and luxury resorts and is a favorite destination for beach weddings. Bali’s tropical beauty, serene beaches and rich culture make it a dream location for a destination wedding. Another favorite is Santorini, Greece, famous for its iconic sunsets and stunning caldera views. The Maldives come to mind as an island getaway with those stunning overwater bungalows. However, Paris, the City of Love, with its timeless romance and iconic landmarks, is a dream destination for couples seeking a truly enchanting wedding experience. Equally stunning is Maui, Hawaii with a mix of natural beauty, adventure and relaxation, making it an especially popular choice for beachfront weddings.

The honeymoon is not just another vacation; it's the magical start to your life together as a married couple and the perfect time to celebrate your love and embark on a new adventure together. It's a time to relax, create memories, lay the foundation for a beautiful married life and strengthen the bond between you and your partner. The wedding destinations I mentioned for the wedding could easily double as a honeymoon destination but do add Bora Bora to that list as it offers a picture-perfect tropical paradise. Kyoto, Japan is a serene destination filled with historic temples, beautiful gardens and delicious cuisine. Exploring the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, set amidst breathtaking Andean scenery is an incredible experience. A is a Safari in Africa literally has everything you could possibly want in a wedding and honeymoon destination. You have the breathtaking African wilderness, interesting cultural experiences, stunningly beautiful islands, delicious cuisine and world-renowned wineries.

The Importance of Romantic Getaways At Various Life Stages

Whether you are renewing vows, celebrating an anniversary or just spending time together, romantic getaways hold a special place at every stage of life. For young couples, romantic trips are a chance to build a strong foundation for a lasting relationship. These getaways create cherished memories that can carry them through life's challenges. As couples journey through life, romance travel provides an opportunity to reconnect, rekindle passion and rediscover each other amidst the busyness of career and family. In a couple’s senior years, romantic getaways offer a chance to celebrate the enduring love that has stood the test of time. These trips bring joy, new adventures and a reminder of love's timelessness. I have found that older couples love to travel with their family and will choose a destination where there are activities that their kids and grandkids will enjoy. This is where I often suggest a cruise with excursions suited to everyone’s taste and where the couple can enjoy some private time as well as time with the family. In all stages of life, romantic travel experiences offer an opportunity to celebrate love, deepen connections and create beautiful memories together.

    Make Romantic Trips Unforgettable

This sounds like a no-brainer, but you will be surprised how many couples want to book a getaway taking the same old trip they always go on. I encourage couples to try something new as they may just discover something new in their partner, too. Life is so short, take that trip, try a destination you never thought about and try new experiences you may think you are too old for. Keep the romance hot and book that romantic trip you have been postponing for so long.

Here is another no-brainer … use a travel agent! Especially to book a destination wedding. It is a tricky business, and you will be so happy you did!

  • Romance on the Water

There’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away. - Sarah Kay, founder and co-director of Project V.O.I.C.E.

There is something undeniably romantic about the sea. It has a way of captivating us, pulling us in and revealing a deep sense of desire. The desire to love and be loved, the desire to travel, the desire to be bigger than ourselves. In many ways, the ocean is a lot like love, majestic and beautiful yet simultaneously rough and mysterious.

And what better way to tap into this connection than to take our love to the high seas? Literally. River cruises and cruise expeditions have long held a place in the hearts of romantics with their rich cultural experiences on shore by day and the sound of softly crashing waves and a sky full of stars by night; nothing else compares.

Join us as we explore four opportunities around the world to experience romance on the water.

Ho Chi Minh City to Siem Reap With Emerald Cruises

Love birds who are seeking an extended getaway in a land far, far away might consider Emerald Cruises' epic 14-night adventure aboard the Emerald Harmony on the ship’s “Wonders of Vietnam, Cambodia & the Mekong - Ho” sailing.

    Why It’s Romantic

Old meets new along the winding Mekong River, where travelers can experience vibrant ancient temples by day and bustling neon-lit cities by night. Everywhere you look, nature and humans work in harmony as rare wildlife — Irrawaddy dolphins, Asian elephants and saola — and dense forests intertwine with floating markets and ornate pagodas. Fresh seafood is abundant alongside noodles and rice dishes paired with coconut water to wash it all down.

    Where They’ll Go

Departing from the UK, this thrilling 15-day adventure traverses 10 cities — Ho Chi Minh City, My Tho, Sa Dec, My An Hung, Hong Ngu, An Long, Long Khanh, Phnom Penh, Prek’kdam and Siem Reap. Couples will kick off their journey in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), the largest city in Vietnam famous for its striking French architecture, mouth-watering culinary scene and historical significance during the Vietnam War. Upon departing Ho Chi Minh City, things hit a slower pace as travelers float the Mekong Delta making stops in small, yet magical towns along the way. Highlights during days four through six include the elaborate Vinh Trang Temple, the storied Hyunh Thuy Le Ancient House and the opportunity to sample exotic fruits like durian, jackfruit, dragon fruit and mangosteen from the comfort of a local village. Entering the halfway point of the cruise, outdoorsy couples will enjoy soaking in the waters beneath the Giang Dien Waterfall, the sights of the Dong Nai Culture and Nature Reserve and Bai Nhat Beach before crossing the Vietnam/Cambodia border on day eight. After a night in Phnom Penh, the Emerald Harmony will pass through Prek’kdam before arriving in Siem Reap, home to the impressive and historic Angkor Archaeological Park.

    Exclusively Adult On Virgin Voyages

Kids — while we love them — can put a damper on a romantic getaway. That’s why Virgin Voyages is “exclusively adult.” From the food and the entertainment to the cabins and the destinations, every swoon-worthy detail abroad each Virgin Voyages ship was designed with adults in mind.

    Why It’s Romantic

With new surprises around every turn, romantic duos will tap into their inner child as they slip into swanky nightclubs, become fully immersed in modern (sometimes naughty) entertainment and feel all their worries melt away at Redemption spa. Over 20 onboard specialty eateries tickle the tastebuds and spark intrigue with grand designs, elevated menus and hands-on experiences. And when it’s time for dessert, a stop at Lick Me Till…Ice Cream will satisfy travelers’ sweet tooths alongside a healthy serving of provocative banter. Back in the cabin, couples can choose the vibe with mood-matching lights that change colors with the touch of a button.

    Where They’ll Go

From sparkling turquoise waters to vibrant coastal cities, sweethearts can choose their own romantic adventure. Caribbean sailings offer a taste of the island life with journeys departing from Miami and San Juan to lively ports throughout the region where travelers will be transported back in time as they stroll cobblestone streets and dive amongst colorful coral reefs. Across the pond, Virgin Voyages’ homeports in Barcelona and Athens offer a stunning start to an epic journey across the Med where the brightly painted streets of Portugal and wild nights in Ibiza and Mykonos beckon. Or, for something more exotic, cruise goers can join Virgin Voyages in the Land Down Under on a sailing that will help them reconnect with nature while exploring some of the best sea cities in the South Pacific.

The cruise line also offers Transatlantic expeditions where Virgin’s lady ships travel from their home ports in the Adriatic, Mediterranean and the Caribbean in search of exciting new stops along the way.

Budapest to Regensburg With Viking River Cruises

Brimming with history, charm and fabulous architecture, romantics will adore a seven-night river cruise from Budapest to Regensburg with Viking Cruises. An adults-only experience, the “Romantic Danube” expedition is the perfect match for travelers who are looking to explore Europe’s medieval towns, grand cities and incredible scenery sans children.

    Why It’s Romantic

A river cruise on the idyllic Danube instantly transports travelers to another time, a time when the streets were paved with cobblestone and the cities were designed for people, not cars. The rolling hills and lush pastures act as a muse, their influence realized in some of the greatest works created by famous musicians and painters throughout the years. The food is a playful mix of hearty and luxurious pairing classic European fare — think pork sausage and wiener schnitzel — with decadent treats like Passau’s praline confections and fruit-flavored Rieslings.

    Where They’ll Go

Sweethearts will begin their journey in Budapest, Hungary — the “Paris of the East” — where they can explore enchanting market halls, marvel at the Hungarian Parliament Building and admire the ancient architecture of old churches and castles. On day three, travelers will make their way to scenic Austria where they’ll visit the towns of Vienna and Krems. As the former home of famous composers Strauss and Mozart, Vienna is a music lover’s paradise with stunning concert halls and several specialty music museums. The region is also well known for its collection of historic buildings such as Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palace in addition to Graben, a picture-perfect street that’s ideal for window shopping. Travelers’ second day in Austria will take place in Krems an der Donau, a delightful town that features a collection of red-roofed homes and flourishing vegetation. Most visitors kick off their stay here with a visit to Winzer Krems, a famous winery and vineyard local to the area in addition to exploring the region’s historic homes, castles and unique museums. Finally, this picturesque expedition wraps in Germany where travelers will discover enchanting Passau, a small village located at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers before making their way to historic Regensburg, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities.

All Out Luxury On Celebrity Cruises

With sailings to breathtaking destinations around the world, a vacation for two aboard Celebrity Cruises is sure to keep the flame burning bright. Welcome champagne and mimosas flow freely upon boarding the ship, offering travelers a taste of what they can expect from this upscale cruise experience.

    Why It’s Romantic

Vast and mighty, the seas create a blissful backdrop for travelers to unwind with their paramour. Whatever the romantic occasion — wedding, honeymoon, anniversary or just life — Celebrity Cruises rises to the occasion with custom celebration packages created with the intent to pamper and inspire.

From the comfort of a private balcony suite, ocean views and incredible sunsets set the mood, sparking feelings of awe and possibility. Special moments are waiting to happen — both onboard and onshore — and this sense is only enhanced with exciting couples activities specifically designed to bring romantic duos even closer together. Those who find their passion in the kitchen will enjoy the cruise line’s beverage and culinary programs where they can sample cocktails and wines from around the world alongside scrumptious bites. Of course, what’s a fantastic dinner without a show? Celebrity is home to some of the best entertainment at sea, and travelers can enjoy award-winning productions without ever leaving the comfort of the ship.

    Where They’ll Go

With service across six regions — Asia, Australia, the Caribbean, Europe, North America and South America — the possibilities for adventure are endless. Whether that means a honeymoon in Hawaii, cocktails in Croatia or the party of a lifetime in Peru, couples can easily choose which destination fits their love story. And, if travelers want to spend some extra time on shore, they can easily do so with Celebrity’s overnight stays, some of which have the option for double-overnights.

  • The Pros and Cons of All-Inclusive Vacations

    10/6/2023 4:40:44 PM Link 0 comments | Add comment

When it comes to planning the perfect vacation, one option that continues to gain popularity is the all-inclusive vacation. But what exactly does all-inclusive mean? Imagine a getaway where your accommodation, meals, drinks and entertainment are all taken care of in one package. No need to worry about budgeting for meals or hunting for restaurants – it's all included! Or is it? If you take a closer look you will notice that there are often exceptions. However, whether you're a beach bum, an adventure seeker or a culture enthusiast, there's an all-inclusive vacation for you.

All-inclusive travel is designed to make your vacation as stress-free as possible, allowing you to focus on relaxation and enjoyment. And while some people love them, others find all-inclusive vacations stifling and well, boring. For example, some of my more adventurous clients love to take a map and point. They get excited thinking about what they’ll find when they get there and book minimal accommodation, leaving the rest to chance. And I get it, that is totally how I love to travel! But, in the meantime, let’s explore the pros and cons of all-inclusive vacations.

All-inclusive vacations are available in a wide range of destinations worldwide. Here are some of the most popular.

Islands like Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and Barbados offer stunning beaches and vibrant local culture.

    Mexican Getaways :

Mexico boasts beautiful resorts on both its Pacific and Caribbean coasts, with diverse experiences ranging from relaxation to adventure. This destination is often very inexpensive.

    Tropical Bliss :

Consider the Maldives, Seychelles or Fiji for a dose of luxury in a tropical paradise.

    European Escapes:

Greece, Spain and Turkey offer all-inclusive options that blend history, culture and relaxation.

    Types of All-Inclusive Resorts

All-inclusive resorts come in various styles to cater to different tastes. Movie night? Romantic dinner or cocktail hour? Spa days, balloon rides or water sports? A walk on the wild side in Africa? All-inclusive vacations have it all … hence the name! Get the thrills and romance for a single price thanks to all-inclusive vacation deals, created with you, the traveler in mind. Beachfront bliss, perfect for sun-seekers, are typically located right on the beach, offering white pristine sand and incredibly blue crystal-clear waters. Luxury retreats where you can indulge in a diverse array of locally sourced and globally inspired culinary delights of local and international foods. Try some of the resort’s activities and enjoy the ultimate stress-free vacation. Opulent accommodations, top-notch amenities, resorts with activities for all ages with family-oriented entertainment await you. Or if you prefer adult-only experiences with a focus on relaxation and a heavy dose of romance … just call your travel advisor and book!

    What's Included and What's Not

All-inclusive packages typically cover the essentials: accommodation, meals (including buffet and a la carte dining), snacks and a variety of beverages, including alcohol. However, there may be exceptions, such as premium liquor, room service, on-site restaurants or certain off-site excursions, which could come with an additional cost. Double check with your travel advisor if you don’t understand exactly what is and is not included.

What to Pack for an All-Inclusive Vacation

Since you planned and booked the experiences you want to have, packing should be a breeze. Remember essentials like swimwear, sunscreen and comfortable resort wear. Many resorts have dress codes for dinner, so don't forget some evening attire. You might also want to pack a good book or e-reader for some poolside or beach relaxation. Do some research about the area you will be going to just in case you want to add some additional activities to your itinerary while you are there.

    Dining Experiences

One of the joys of an all-inclusive vacation is the variety of dining experiences. Most resorts offer a mix of buffet-style dining and a la carte restaurants. Do try local cuisine, international flavors and gourmet meals during your stay, but again, make sure these are included.

    Sustainability and Responsible Tourism

Many all-inclusive resorts are adopting eco-friendly practices and supporting responsible tourism initiatives. Consider choosing a resort that aligns with your values for a more sustainable vacation experience.

Tips for Booking an All-Inclusive Vacation

As with any vacation, unless you are the type that prefers spontaneous unplanned trips, research your destination well. Make sure that you know of all the pros and cons of your preferred destination and choose one that aligns with your interests and travel style. Then read the reviews. All of them; the 5-star and 1-star reviews as you just never know whether the person who gave that 1-star review has the same pet peeves you do. Consider the duration and book a stay that will accommodate all you want to experience. Keep a lookout for the best deals and room options and if you can, book in advance. The best option? Work with a travel advisor!

Your Travel Advisor – The Most Important Tool in Your Planning Toolbox

Your travel advisor is the ultimate resource for crafting your journey’s ideal itinerary. With their expertise and insider knowledge, they create a personalized travel plan that caters to your interests, preferences and budget. Whether you're seeking adventure, relaxation or cultural immersion, your travel advisor's insights and connections ensure every aspect of your trip is thoughtfully designed to create unforgettable experiences. From selecting the perfect accommodations to arranging unique activities and excursions, they transform your travel dreams into a meticulously planned reality.

    What To Do...

While all-inclusive vacations offer many benefits, they aren't without their drawbacks. One common concern is the feeling of being confined to the resort, which can limit opportunities for exploring the local culture and attractions as it can become expensive. Some travelers may also find that the "buffet fatigue" sets in after a few days, as dining options can become repetitive. Additionally, not all inclusions are created equal. Finally, the sheer size of some all-inclusive resorts can make them feel crowded during peak seasons, potentially compromising the tranquility that many seek during a vacation. Therefore, it's important to carefully research and choose an all-inclusive package that aligns with your travel preferences and expectations.

Personally, if you haven’t booked an all-inclusive vacation before and are not sure how you feel about the experience, I recommend trying one for a long weekend to see if it is for you. I do recommend this type of travel to families with young kids as there are always lots of activities for them to enjoy.

All-inclusive vacations can offer a fantastic way to unwind, explore and create lasting memories. With a wide range of destinations and resort types to choose from, you can tailor your vacation to your preferences. Whether you're sipping cocktails on a beach in the Caribbean, exploring ancient ruins in Mexico or having a once-in-a-lifetime safari experience, all-inclusive vacations provide the ultimate combination of relaxation and adventure.
